LITHA

I THE MEANING

{Originally used as Litha 2004}

  Our Midsummer Gathering is a celebration of the return of the magickal creatures to the Earth.  As the light reaches its peak, this holy day comes on the longest day of the year.  It, like most of the holy days is based on a natural occurrance.  This is a night of magic and madness, as the creatures of forest mythology are very active this night. This is a time when the darkness begins its reign and the days begin to shorten.  It is a time for introspection into your soul, when you begin to look at yourself as an individual and work on changing yourself for the better.

This year’s gathering will be on Sunday, June 20th at 7:00pm at our gardens.  It will still be light outside, but we will be welcoming the night.  Join us for a ritual of transition as we commune with the creatures of the night and welcome magick back into our lives.

Meditation:

I want you all to close your eyes.  Picture yourself in a dark forest with the noises of nature all around you.  There is nothing frightening here.  The path leads into a deep part of the woods that you have never been to before.

You follow the winding path deeper and deeper into the woods until you find yourself entering a huge clearing in the center of the woods.  As you watch the edges of the clearing, you see magickal creatures appear and disappear.  You are being watched.  They do not seem to want to harm you, but they are watching.  At the center of the clearing there is a lone figure seated, reading aloud.  You walk closer so you may hear what the figure says.

“In this enchanted circle” The figure says, “You will see creatures of the night in each of the four directions.”

In the North, you see the powerful great horned owl.  This is the one of the most powerful of all the night predators.  He looks upon you with cold judgment and raw strength.

In the East you see the beautiful barn owl.  This ghostly presence has the beauty and grace of the clouds and the energy of the young.  He fills you with a feeling of lightness.

In the South you see the tiny red screech owl.  This small night dweller looks back at you with the power of the flame in his eyes.  He shows you determination and passion.

In the West you see the mysterious Barred Owl.  This night hunter looks at you with eyes that are as black as the depths of the ocean, but are a deep blue in the light.  She shows you how to adapt and flow.  She brings with her the wisdom of the ages.

Now I want you to think about which owl means the most to you right now; what element you need to commune with.  When you have decided, I want you to open your eyes and look at that direction of the circle.  Go near, but not to the altar that has been set up during this meditation and sit in front of it.  Learn what you can from the direction
